Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has said a trade war would benefit no one, responding to threats by Donald Trump to impose a 10 percent tax on imports from the UK and other countries opposing his plan to take control of Greenland.
Speaking from Downing Street, Sir Keir said disputes between allies should be handled through calm and constructive dialogue, adding that the use of tariffs was not an appropriate way to resolve differences. He reaffirmed his view that any decision about Greenland’s future must rest with the people of Greenland and Denmark.
While stressing that principles cannot be ignored, the prime minister said he would take a pragmatic approach, highlighting the economic and military importance of the UK’s relationship with the United States. He also said he did not believe Mr Trump was seriously considering military action over Greenland.
Despite efforts to ease tensions, Sir Keir warned that the situation remained serious and called it a moment for national unity. He welcomed the backing of Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch on the issue of Greenland and the potential impact of tariffs.
