In a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump on Wednesday, Chinese leader Xi Jinping referred to Taiwan as “the most important issue” in China-US relations. Xi had advised Trump to be “prudent” while delivering weaponry to the island, state media claimed, adding that he “attaches great importance” to ties with Washington and hoped both parties could find methods to address their disputes.

Trump cast the call as “excellent” and “long and thorough. Wednesday’s call follows a flurry of visits by Western politicians, like UK’s Keir Starmer, to China in recent months, aiming to reset relations with the world’s second-largest economy.Trump himself is slated to visit China in April, a trip he says he “very much looks forward to”.

He added that Beijing is considering buying 20 million tonnes of US soybeans, up from the existing 12 million tonnes. “The relationship with China, and my personal relationship with President Xi, is an extraordinarily excellent one, and we both realise how crucial it is to keep it that way,” he stated in a Truth Social post.

According to Trump and China’s foreign ministry, the two leaders last had a phone conversation in November regarding a variety of topics, including trade, fentanyl, Taiwan, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
