As the Kremlin’s war on Ukraine nears its fourth anniversary, the average Russian has started to feel the squeeze, with the country’s economy hovering between stagnation and decline.
Alexander has seen that the price of nearly every basic item, including seasonal vegetables, chicken fillets, and eggs, has increased in the local supermarkets. All of the people we spoke with for this article have had their names changed.
Even his daily treat, an Americano from a nearby cafe on his way to work, has unexpectedly increased in price by 26%, from 230 to 290 roubles. Since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, prices have been rising gradually in Russia due to a federal budget that is controlled by the defence and war effort sectors. As a result, the economy has grown quickly and living standards have increased nationwide.
