As the war entered its ninth day and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged “many surprises” in the next stage of the fight that will reverberate throughout the region, Israel resumed its attack on southern Lebanon early on Sunday. After Israel ordered significant areas of the country to evacuate during an attack that its military stated would be aimed at stamping out Iran-supported forces there, the most recent strikes in Lebanon killed at least 20 additional people, bringing the total number of fatalities there past 300.

During an attack that the military said would be intended to drive out Iran-backed soldiers in the region, the Israeli military has ordered tens of thousands of residents to leave significant areas of the country, including parts of the Beirut area. On Sunday morning, it advised those living in southern Lebanon to relocate north.

Hezbollah launched missiles toward northern Israel in the early days of the conflict, sparking Israel’s fresh offensive last week. Since a ceasefire in November 2024, the ensuing strikes have been the most severe.

Hezbollah had been attempting to reestablish its positions in southern Lebanon, according to Israel, which withdrew from much of that region at the time but continued to launch strikes almost every day. Last week, Hezbollah declared that its patience had run out and that it had no choice but to fight after more than a year of adhering to a ceasefire while Israel’s assaults on Lebanon persisted.
