The White House has announced that US Vice President JD Vance would travel to Hungary on Tuesday and Wednesday during the last week of campaigning prior to the nation’s general election. Vance will discuss the “rich partnership between the United States and Hungary” and meet with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, the White House said.

The visit takes place as Hungary gets ready for a crucial election on April 12, which will pose the greatest threat to Orbán’s 16-year hold on power. Opinion polls show Orbán’s Fidesz trailing behind the opposition Tisza party, led by Páv Magyar. Orbán’s hardline, anti-immigration stance has received strong backing from the Trump administration. Prior to the election in February, President Donald Trump openly supported the prime minister of Hungary.

Days before a crucial election on April 12th, in which Prime Minister Viktor Orbán will face his most formidable opposition challenge in years, US Vice President JD Vance will visit Budapest on Tuesday and Wednesday to meet with Orbán.
