Businessman Vasile Tofan was selected by pro-European President Maia Sandu on Saturday to succeed Alexandru Munteanu as prime minister of Moldova. Munteanu resigned earlier this month due to disagreements with the ruling majority.

Sandu stated in a video that was shared on social media that Tofan’s main duty will be to advance the nation’s “integration” into the European Union once his candidacy is accepted by the legislature. Sandu stated that he ought to “revive the economy” and “strengthen the resilience of state institutions and society.”

After submitting his government program and his nominees for ministerial cabinet, the Moldovan businessman now has two weeks to gain legislative support. On Friday, Igor Grosu, the leader of Sandu’s Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), which emerged victorious in the most recent legislative elections in September, declared that he had chosen him to succeed the departing premier.

“EU accession in the years to come, institutional reform and economic growth” were among the main grounds of agreement, he added, adding that Tofan had “the same objectives” with him and PAS.
