Following the departure of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, US Vice President JD Vance stated that Britain has been “failed by its leadership for a long time”. Vance, who has been a vocal critic of the UK and Europe in general since taking office in January 2025, made the remarks in an interview with The Sunday Times published this weekend.
Vance described Britain as “amazing,” but also identified “very broken” aspects of British politics.People are crying out for significant structural change, he stated. I hope Andy Burnham or someone else is able to deliver it. Because Britain is such a beautiful and amazing place.”Starmer, who will remain in power until his Labour Party selects a replacement, announced his resignation as Prime Minister last month, citing rising pressure following catastrophic municipal election results in May.
He is anticipated to be succeeded by newly elected MP Andy Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester, who won the Makerfield by-election in June. If he is successful, Burnham will become the seventh British prime minister in a decade. Vance expressed hope that the next prime minister will be able to figure out “how to get Britain back on track”.
