Multiple sources close to the investigation have stated that the FlyDubai co-pilot responsible for the hijacking attempt had previously flown the sensitive Israel route and intended to crash the aircraft into Ben Gurion Airport. This information is being presented in the context of the increasingly challenging questions surrounding the circumstances of the narrowly avoided tragedy.
Multiple US and Israeli media outlets have reported that the co-pilot of the FlyDubai FZ1073 flight bound for Israel intended to crash the aircraft into Tel Aviv’s Ben-Gurion Airport, as per sources familiar with the multinational investigation.
The Omani national identified by numerous sources as Hamam Al-Hammami was likely acting independently, according to the same reports. Following the assassination of captain Smit Machchhar, Al-Hammami intended to pilot the aircraft toward Ben Gurion Airport using standard approach and landing procedures, only to wreck it at the last minute, resulting in the deaths of over 180 passengers.
The co-pilot had been preparing the attack for several months and had previously travelled to Israel to acquire information, according to Israeli media sources who were informed of the investigation.UAE Prosecutor General Hamad Saif al-Shamsi stated in the initial remarks of Emirati investigators on Saturday that the co-pilot of FlyDubai flight FZ1073 “attempted to carry out a terrorist attack” by attacking the flight captain with an axe and attempting to take control of the aircraft.
The UAE is conducting the investigation, with assistance from the US and other Western governments. Security agencies from four regional countries, including Israel, are currently investigating the co-pilot’s motivations.
