In reaction to Tehran’s attacks on three ships in the Strait of Hormuz, the US began further strikes on Iran early on Wednesday, striking around 80 targets, according to US Central Command. In a statement uploaded to X, the US military stated, “US forces attacked Iranian defense systems, command and control networks, coastal radar sites, anti-ship missile capabilities, and more than 60 Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps small boats in and near the strait.”
The attacks occurred while US President Donald Trump was in Turkey for a NATO military alliance gathering. Iran warned Washington right after that it would “take whatever measures it deems necessary,” increasing the possibility that a temporary cease-fire agreement in the conflict would fall apart and again put the Middle East at risk of a wider battle.
Following the US attack on Iran on Wednesday morning, Bahrain, which is home to the US Navy’s 5th Fleet, activated its missile alert sirens. American troops initiated the strikes “to impose heavy costs for targeting and attacking commercial shipping crewed by innocent civilians in an international waterway,” according to CENTCOM.
