As part of the largest reorganisation in the company’s nearly nine-decade history, the board of the German automaker Volkswagen has authorised a plan to eliminate an additional 50,000 positions.

After declaring in March that it would eliminate 50,000 jobs, the manufacturer now intends to eliminate 100,000 jobs by 2030. The group, which includes the VW brand, Audi, Porsche, and Skoda, is also considering the future of four of its German operations.

Oliver Blume, the CEO of VW, said in a statement on Thursday that the action is a “strong signal” for the company’s future and that it is “taking responsibility for our entire workforce.” In July, Blume stated that the company wanted to make the extra cuts. On Friday morning, the company’s shares were up almost 7% in Frankfurt.

Due to declining sales and intense competition, particularly from Chinese brands, the golf manufacturer has seen a decline in profitability. Additionally, the company stated that it would lower the complexity of its product by 75% and the number of models it creates by 50% by 2035.
