The previous several weeks have been described as Donald Trump’s revenge tour, as he settles old scores with his Republican detractors. Call it what you will, but the evidence is overwhelming that the Republican Party is Trump’s party, and nothing – not an unpopular war in Iran, sagging public poll numbers, rising consumer prices, or concerns about billion-dollar White House ballrooms – has changed that.
Thomas Massie, Kentucky’s independent representative, was easily beaten on Tuesday in the Republican primary fight to choose who will face Democrats in the November midterm elections. Ed Gallrein, the Trump-backed candidate, is on track to win 55% of the vote.
Massie, a Republican dissident who has been a regular thorn in Trump’s side, is the latest in a long list of political casualties. His misdeeds were many.
He criticized Trump’s tax-and-spending budget proposal last year, claiming it increased the federal debt. He voted to limit the president’s military activities in Venezuela and Iran. Perhaps most notably, he was the main force behind House efforts to force the release of Justice Department information on Jeffrey Epstein, a disgraced financier and sex offender with ties to the wealthy and powerful.
