Officials are looking into what prompted an Amazon cargo jet to overrun the runway after landing at Miami International Airport in a fatal accident on Sunday. The plane, operated by 21 Air, crashed shortly before 14:00 (18:00 GMT), killing five people and critically injuring five others.

The Boeing 767-300 crossed a road beyond the runway, colliding with multiple automobiles on the ground. It is unclear whether those who were killed were aboard the aeroplane, on the ground, or both. Members of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the federal body investigating the tragedy, are on site and will update reporters on Monday afternoon.

21 Air, a North Carolina-based charter firm said it was “devastated by the accident involving one of our aircraft in Miami”. Both 21 Air and Amazon stated they were cooperating with the investigation.”At least five people have died and five others have been injured,” Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava stated during a news conference on Sunday evening. She further stated that rescue services arrived at the scene within “seconds” of the incident.
