Europe’s retirement ages are growing as people live longer, but the number of years that people are projected to live after retirement varies greatly between nations. According to the OECD, the retirement age in the EU is 64.7 years for men and 64 years for women as of 2024. Euronews Business used life expectancy at the retirement age in each nation since people are entitled for pensions after they reach retirement age.

If they fulfilll further requirements, such as the necessary number of years of employment, they might anticipate receiving a pension for that number of years. Naturally, some retirees keep working when they reach retirement age.

In the EU, women are anticipated to live for 21.8 years after retirement, while males are expected to live for an average of 18.4 years. Based on Eurostat and OECD data from 2024, these numbers represent life expectancy at retirement ages.

In Bulgaria and Hungary, men are expected to get a pension for 14.7 years, but in Turkey, it is 27.3 years. Men in Luxembourg are expected to get a pension for 22 years, which is the longest term in the EU. The two main causes of this disparity are variations in life expectancy and retirement ages.
