Eurozone nations have until this Friday to propose a candidate to succeed Christine Lagarde, a representative for the Eurogroup, which brings together eurozone finance ministers, told Euronews. The names will be discussed by the bloc’s finance ministers when they meet on 9 November.
“The Council of the EU has started the procedure to appoint a successor to the ECB President following Lagarde’s letter to European Council President Antonio Costa last Thursday,” the spokeswoman added.“The members of the Executive Board of the ECB are appointed by the European Council on a proposal from the Council,” they said, referring to EU leaders and state ministers. Lagarde last week said she would step down on 7 February 2027, over nine months before the end of her eight-year term.
Later that day in Frankfurt she told reporters that quitting will free her to speak out beyond monetary policy.“I don’t think I can stay neutral,” Lagarde remarked. I am interested in the truth, and I see the truth very often corrupted, refuted by distortion. But Lagarde declined to indicate whether she would support a candidate in France’s presidential election in April 2027.
