Since 1992, resolutions of comparable nature have been adopted on an annual basis; however, they are typically approved by substantial margins. The UN General Assembly has once again urged the United States to end its embargo on Cuba; however, its support for the resolution has plummeted to its lowest point in over three decades.

The resolution, which has been proposed and approved on an annual basis since 1992, was passed with 130 countries in favour, 17 against, and 25 abstentions. This represents the lowest level of support observed since 1995.

The proposal was supported by over 160 countries last year. For the first time in 34 years, Germany, Italy, and Latvia refrained from voting. Many of the countries that voted against the resolution for the first time were Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Morocco, Slovenia, and Bosnia.

The US embargo was implemented in 1960, following the nationalisation of US-owned property and the revolution led by Fidel Castro. A renewed pressure campaign by Washington, which includes restrictions on oil supplies and broad sanctions, has gravely damaged Cuba’s economy, is currently causing high tensions between the US and Cuba.

Mike Waltz, the United States ambassador to the United Nations, denied that Cuba was under a blockade just minutes before the vote in New York. He also stated that “the plight of the Cuban people is exclusively the fault of this corrupt communist regime.
