Oncologists criticized former cricket player and Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu’s recent claims that his wife was cured of the deadly disease through diet on Monday, saying that chemotherapy, surgery, or radiation are the mainstays of cancer treatment and that there is no one magic cure for the disease.

The oncologists criticised Sidhu, a former Rajya Sabha member, for “creating sensationalism” and misleading people.

Sidhu referred to his wife Navjot Kaur’s breast cancer treatment as “starving cancer by not eating dairy products and sugar” during a recent press appearance in Amritsar, Punjab. In the social media video that went viral, Sidhu claimed that his wife’s “incurable” disease was cured by consuming neem and haldi (turmeric).

Cancer is not a single illness with a single panacea. The subtype of cancer, unique genetic alterations in the cancer cells, the organ of origin, the degree of disease spread at the time of diagnosis, and a variety of other criteria all play a role in the treatment plan,” Dr. Harit Chaturvedi, Chairman of the Max Institute of Cancer Care, told IANS.

“Either chemotherapy, surgery, or radiation therapy are used to treat cancer. This serves as the foundation for the treatment. The medication cannot be replaced by other adjuncts, such as nutrition control, dietary changes, or natural substances,” Dr. Pritam Kataria, Consultant in Medical Oncology at Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, continued.
