For their “outstanding performance” in the International Court of Justice, the UAE’s diplomatic and legal team received praise from a top diplomat. According to Dr. Anwar Gargash, the UAE President’s diplomatic adviser, the Emirates were subjected to “fabricated and weak charges aimed at media spectacle.

Public hearings into the case brought by the Sudanese Armed Forces against the United Arab Emirates began on Thursday morning at the International Court of Justice. Gargash stated that the “Sudanese military government must realise that the real goal is stability in Sudan, by urgently halting this war.” Sudan must forge “a political path that preserves the country’s unity and the lives of its citizens,” he emphasized.

Regarding the atrocities against the Masalit ethnic group in West Darfur by the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces and affiliated groups, the Sudanese military charged that the United Arab Emirates had violated its commitments under the Genocide Convention. Under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, Sudan submitted an application for temporary measures in its case.

The UAE called Sudan’s claims “pure fabrications” and denied any involvement in the fighting. Speaking before the court, Reem Ketait, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Deputy Assistant Minister for Political Affairs, charged Sudan with attempting to “distract attention from their own culpability.
