The Palestinian armed organisation would reject the most recent US proposal for a new ceasefire and hostage release agreement in Gaza, a senior Hamas official told the BBC. The White House said Thursday that it was awaiting an official response from Hamas and that Israel has “signed off” on the proposal proposed by US ambassador Steve Witkoff.
According to Israeli sources quoted by Israeli media, Hamas will release the remains of 18 deceased hostages and 10 live hostages in two stages in return for a 60-day truce and the release of Palestinian inmates held in Israeli prisons.
According to the Hamas official, the plan did not meet the organization’s fundamental needs, such as ending the conflict, and it would react when the time was right. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu allegedly assured the relatives of the detainees on Thursday that he approved of Witkoff’s idea, although the Israeli government has not responded.
After a two-month truce mediated by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt failed, Israel placed a complete blockade on Gaza and recommenced its military campaign against Hamas on March 18. With at least 20 of the 58 hostages it is still holding thought to be alive, it stated that it wished to exert pressure on Hamas to free them.
