Last year, astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore were unable to fly forward to dock after their Boeing Starliner capsule’s thrusters failed as they neared the ISS. They were also uncertain about their chances of returning home if they were unable to dock.

Docking was imperative,” Mr. Wilmore told BBC News two months after he and Ms. Williams were back on Earth together. Would we be able to return if we were unable to dock? We were unaware. During their eight-day test journey, the astronauts had been travelling. Rather, they remained in space for over ten months.

The first task was to safely and successfully dock with the ISS, which they accomplished in a matter of minutes after receiving assistance from Mission Control on the ground to restart the craft’s engines.

The idea that they would never see Earth again “definitely went through our minds,” according to Mr. Wilmore. However, both astronauts claimed that because they were taught to solve difficulties on their own, they didn’t voice the worst-case scenarios aloud at those times.

Ms. Williams told the BBC, “You kind of read each other’s mind and know where we’re going with all the failures. These were not imagined,” she acknowledged. “At the same a period of time you know, we’re like, what do we have? ” However, ideas soon shifted to solutions. How can we proceed?
