Following his meeting with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, US President Donald Trump has now left Beijing, claiming to have made “fantastic trade deals, great for both countries.” Trump referred to the relationship between China and the United States as “the world’s most consequential economic relationship” while traveling with a prominent corporate delegation that included representatives from the fields of agriculture, aviation, electric vehicles, and artificial intelligence (AI) chips.
Warm speech and symbolism rather than tangible economic results characterized the two-day summit; day one featured ornate ceremonies and optimistic language but no major commercial deals or trade breakthroughs.
Xi referred to the summit as a “historic and landmark” visit, while Trump described it as “very successful” following Friday’s conclusion of negotiations. However, no significant commercial accord or structural agreement was reached despite the choreography.
Trump stated in an interview with Fox News that China has decided to order 200 Boeing aircraft, which is a smaller quantity than analysts had anticipated but China’s first purchase of US-made commercial aircraft in almost ten years.
