A candlelight vigil has been organised by thousands of people inAustrians in honour of the victims of a school massacre that claimed ten lives. The 21-year-old suspect, a former student, committed himself in a school lavatory immediately after Tuesday’s gun attack in Graz, which was the worst in the nation’s recent history, according to police.

Police said in a statement on Wednesday that they searched the suspect’s house and discovered a “farewell letter” and a pipe bomb that was not working. Authorities have not verified the motivation of the shooter. Twelve more individuals were hurt in the event, which happened at Dreierschützengasse Secondary School in the city’s northwest.

Three men and six women were murdered in the assault, while a seventh woman passed away in the hospital afterwards. According to Austria’s APA news agency, seven of the victims were students. During the vigil on Tuesday night, residents of Graz expressed their desire to transform the city’s central plaza into a sea of candles, and they succeeded in doing so.

Throughout the evening, thousands of individuals, largely young, congregated in the whispering quiet, either by themselves or by holding onto their friends’ arms or shoulders. They stood in prayer or reflection for a while, lighted candles, or wept.
