In Germany, five men have been detained on suspicion of participating in a scheme to crash a car into people at a Christmas market. Due to their intention to target a market in the southern Bavarian state, three Moroccans, an Egyptian, and a Syrian were arrested on Friday. An “Islamist motive” was suspected, according to authorities.
The 56-year-old Egyptian was accused of “calling for a vehicle attack to kill or injure as many people as possible,” according to the prosecution. It is said that the Moroccans consented to execute the assault. Following earlier attacks at Christmas markets, including one in Magdeburg last December that claimed six lives, German officials have been on high alert.
Authorities stated they thought it was a market in the Dingolfing-Landau area, northeast of Munich, but they did not specify when the planned attack was scheduled to occur or which market was the target. The Egyptian man was an imam at a nearby mosque, according to the German tabloid Bild.
The Syrian male, 37, was charged with supporting the suspects “in their decision to commit the crime,” according to police, while the Moroccan men, ages 30, 28, and 22, were detained on suspicion of having consented to murder.
