US special envoy Steve Witkoff will meet the president of Ukraine’s national security council, Rustem Umerov, for discussion in Miami on Thursday, the White House announced. The meeting comes after Witkoff spent over five hours with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Tuesday, conversations which the Kremlin said yielded “no compromise” on halting the war in Ukraine.
The conversations were “reasonably good,” according to US President Trump, who also mentioned that his son-in-law Jared Kushner was present. However, he noted that it was too soon to predict the outcome because “it does take two to tango.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Russia must ” put an end to the bloodshed”, and charged Putin with “wasting the world’s time”. When questioned by a reporter if Witkoff and Kushner believed Putin truly wanted to end the war, Trump replied, “[Putin] would like to terminate the war. That was their impression.
Earlier on Wednesday, Zelensky claimed that an exchange between US and Ukrainian mediators would take place “in the coming days”. In a statement to X, Zelensky stated, “Right now, the world plainly believes that there is a serious potential to stop the war. But he said that conversations must be ‘backed by exerting pressure on Russia.
