At the age of 95, actor Robert Duvall, who starred in Apocalypse Now and The Godfather, passed away. According to a statement released by his public relations firm on behalf of his wife, Luciana, the Tender Mercies Oscar winner passed away “peacefully” at his Middleburg, Virginia, home on Sunday.
To the world, he was a filmmaker, a storyteller, and an Academy Award-winning actor. He was really everything to me,” she remarked. “His passion for his craft was matched only by his deep love for characters, a great meal, and holding court.
In his homage, Godfather star Al Pacino described working with Duvall as a “honour.” Over the course of his remarkable six-decade career, Duvall was known for a number of tough-guy characters, including the mafia consigliere in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather and The Godfather Part II.
In Coppola’s epic about Vietnam, Apocalypse Now, he also portrayed a tough army officer. His iconic phrase from the 1979 classic, “I love the smell of napalm in the morning,” became legendary despite his brief on-screen appearance.
