Over Ukraine, Vladimir Putin sent a straightforward message to the West by hypersonic missile: retreat, or else Russia may strike US and British military installations.
Putin said that Russia’s Thursday firing of the new “Oreshnik,” or Hazel Tree, intermediate-range hypersonic ballistic missile was a direct reaction to Ukrainian forces using American and British missiles to hit Russia.
The Russian president, avoiding any nuclear hyperbole, stated in a special Kremlin statement shortly after 8 p.m. that day that the war was intensifying toward a worldwide confrontation.
Additionally, Putin has so far avoided really attacking the West, which may result in a direct conflict between Russia and the NATO alliance – and a confrontation that US President Joe Biden said in March 2022 would be World War III.
According to a Reuters report, the Kremlin chief warned the West in his address that Russia reserved the right to attack the military facilities of nations that allow Ukraine to use their missiles to attack Russia, so far only the United States and Britain.
Although the likelihood of Russia using nuclear weapons remained high, Putin had indicated that he wanted to avoid escalation, according to a Russian source who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the delicate nature of the issue.
