After being formally introduced as Real Madrid’s new manager on Monday, Xabi Alonso believes he is prepared to guide the team into an exciting new era. The 43-year-old Spaniard, who made 236 appearances and won five major championships during his six seasons as a midfielder with Los Blancos from 2009 to 2015, is returning to the Spanish capital.
After a disappointing season in which Real Madrid lost both the Spanish and European championships, the Italian takes over as manager, replacing the seasoned Carlo Ancelotti.
“This is unquestionably a significant day for me. A day that will be permanently recorded on my calendar. Alonso, who began his management career at Real Madrid’s junior system and coached their Under-14s in 2018, expressed his happiness at being here, in what he felt was his home.
The connection to Madrid has always been there and has been renewed since I walked into Valdebebas [training facility] an hour and a half ago. It seems to me that a new age is getting underway.
Our squad and players are outstanding, and we have a lot of potential. I have a lot of energy and eagerness to come here. We are confident that we can accomplish significant goals deserving of Real Madrid and these European Cups.
