China and the US Are Now Communicating. Why Now?

With negotiations between the two biggest economies in the world about to start in Switzerland, the US-China trade war may be coming to an end. The first high-level gathering since US President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on China in January will take place on Saturday and will bring together top trade officials from both sides.

Beijing promptly replied, and the two nations piled on levies during the following heated standoff. Although some Chinese imports to the US are subject to taxes as high as 245%, those now stand at 125%.

Each side has attempted to portray the other as the more desperate party over weeks of harsh, occasionally acrimonious, discourse. Nevertheless, they will be bargaining with one another this weekend.

Both parties have been indicating that they wish to overcome the impasse despite many rounds of tit-for-tat tariffs. But who will flinch first remained unclear. Stephen Olson, a former US trade negotiator and senior visiting fellow at Singapore’s ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute, stated that “neither side wants to appear to be backing down.” The reason the negotiations are happening now is that both nations have decided they can proceed without seeming to give in to the opposition.
