Despite US President Donald Trump’s growing push for peace, Russian President Vladimir Putin made it clear on Wednesday that he will not back down from his demands that Ukraine give up territory.
Putin attacked Ukraine’s European partners and threatened to use force to seize land if necessary in a confrontational address given as US and European leaders engage in desperate diplomatic efforts to reach a peace deal. We would prefer to do this, and eliminate the root causes of the conflict, through diplomacy,” Putin stated during the Russian Defense Ministry’s annual meeting.
The conflicting interests of Ukraine, the US, Europe, and Russia have been made clear by the difficulty in resolving this territorial issue as well as security guarantees for Ukraine during the peace negotiations.
The Donbas region of Ukraine has been unlawfully acquired by Russia, but it has not yet been completely subjugated. According to an analysis by the US-based conflict monitor Institute for the Study of War, Russia would not take control of the entire territory until August 2027 at the current rate of its advance.
