Donald Trump Continues to Threaten the Tax-Exempt Status of Harvard University

President Donald Trump of the United States has reaffirmed his threat to revoke Harvard University’s tax-exempt status, a move that, if carried out, could cost the Ivy League university billions of dollars. We intend to revoke Harvard’s tax-exempt status. It is what they are due! Trump posted on his social media account, Truth Social, on Friday.

The remark is the most recent threat in the ongoing conflict between Harvard, the oldest university in the nation, and the Republican president. Trump has worked to expand his authority over US colleges and suppress what he views as “illegal protests” on campus since he was elected to a second term on January 20.

However, Harvard has been the target of his public outrage, especially after school administrators rejected a set of requests given by the Trump administration on April 11. Trump officials demanded in a five-page letter (PDF) that Harvard abolish its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, conduct an external audit of programs deemed anti-Semitic, investigate protesters participating in pro-Palestinian demonstrations, and reform its student disciplinary system.
