On Wednesday, the Mankhurd police filed a formal complaint against Sunil Pal for allegedly breaking the model code of conduct by holding a religious event in an open area and urging North Indians to support BJP candidate Mihir Kotecha.
More than 200 people attended the May 6 event near Makhurd’s Sankatmochan Hanuman Mandir. After seeing the video on social media, M-Ward civic officials—appointed to handle election-related matters—filed a complaint. In the video, a few BJP supporters could be seen endorsing Kotecha, the party’s nominee from Mumbai North East.
Following notification by the civic authorities to the election commission, the BMC officials were directed to initiate criminal proceedings against the programme organisers. A number of people spoke on stage to support Mihir Kotecha and to express gratitude to the BJP party workers. A police officer stated, “One Sunil Pal organised the programme; he did not obtain any prior permission.
The Indian Penal Code’s section 188, “Disobedience to Order Duly Promulgated by Public Servant,” as well as a number of other pertinent Acts, were used to register the case.
