A recent study’s findings were released in the journal Nature Metabolism on Tuesday. The Adiposity researchers defined regular, long-term exercise as at least four times a week for a minimum of two years.

Researchers Jeffrey Horowitz, PhD, a professor of movement science at the University of Michigan School of Kinesiology, said in a statement, “Our findings indicate that in addition to being a means to expend calories, exercising regularly for several months to years seems to modify your fat tissue in ways that allows you to store your body fat more healthfully if or when you do experience some weight gain – as nearly everyone does as we get older.

Just 32 adults with obesity or overweight were included in the small study, half of whom were regular exercisers. The study participants had an average body mass index of approximately 30, which is the threshold value for obesity. (The body mass index is determined by multiplying weight by height.) Each group’s members were matched according to body fat mass, weight, and gender. Their ages varied from twenty-five to thirty-seven.
