At least four people have died and several others are missing after flash floods hit a village in northern India, officials said on Tuesday. The floods struck Dharali, a mountain village in Himalayan Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand. TV videos showed strong water flows rushing down the hills and hitting the village.

Many homes, roads, and a local market were severely damaged. About a dozen hotels were swept away, and many shops have fallen, said Prashant Arya, a local official. He added that the army and police are helping in the search and rescue work.

India’s disaster team has asked for three helicopters to help with rescue work, as it’s hard to reach the area. Officials don’t yet know how many people are missing or trapped. More heavy rain is expected in the coming days, the weather office said. Schools have been told to stay closed in some places, including Dehradun and Haridwar. Uttarakhand, a mountain area, often gets flash floods and landslides during the rainy season. Sudden heavy rains, called cloudbursts, are happening more often now.
