As the risk of food-borne pathogens like salmonella, listeria, and E. coli has increased in the larger U.S. food supply chain, recent recalls of several food products have worried consumers and health officials.

Following routine testing that revealed evidence of germs, deli meat, frozen waffles, McDonald’s hamburgers, and ready-to-eat poultry dinners offered at Walmart, Trader Joe’s, and Costco have all been recalled.

Following the discovery of E. coli at a Virginia facility that produced ready-to-eat liverwurst, the well-known Boar’s Head company was forced to recall 7.1 million pounds of deli meat; the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention reported that at least 10 people died and that 59 infections were reported in 19 states.

E. Coli, which has been connected to McDonald’s Quarter Pounders, caused at least 75 illnesses in ten states. Federal officials believe the bacteria was present in the raw slivered onions atop the burgers, although the company’s subsequent testing of the beef in question revealed no E. coli. The business that makes frozen waffles and pancakes recalled products that were sold at Target, Dollar General, and Publix.
