According to President Emmanuel Macron, France and the Palestinian Authority will establish a “joint panel” to draft a new constitution for Palestine. Following a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Paris, Macron made the statements.

We decided together to set up a joint committee for the consolidation of the state of Palestine,” Macron stated, adding that it will “contribute to drawing up a new constitution, a draft of which president Abbas presented to me” . According to Abbas, “to the swift establishment of the legislative committee” was acceptable.

The meeting takes place one month into a precarious ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, which the United States mediated. The two-year conflict in Gaza was brought on by the militant organisation’s invasion of southern Israel in 2023. It also occurred a few weeks after France recognised Palestinian statehood, together with several other nations, primarily from Western Europe.

For the past 20 years, Abbas has led the Palestinian Authority, which has little authority over some regions of the occupied West Bank. As part of the ceasefire agreement, the authority is being considered to assume control of Gaza’s governance. The Israeli aspiration to fully annex the West Bank, which Macron called a “red line” for Paris, was another topic of discussion between the two presidents.
