Following his conviction for organizing a military takeover, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was given a sentence of 27 years and three months in jail. The former leader was found guilty only hours before a panel of five Supreme Court judges imposed the punishment.

In 2022, he lost to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a left-wing candidate, and they found him guilty of orchestrating a plot to maintain him in power. Although one justice voted to acquit him, the other four ruled him guilty. In addition to calling the punishment “absurdly excessive,” Bolsonaro’s attorneys stated that they will make “the appropriate appeals.

In 2033, the Supreme Court panel also prohibited him from seeking public office. After being placed under house arrest for being a flight risk, Bolsonaro did not physically attend this last round of the trial.

Even though he had already been disqualified from public office on other grounds, he has previously stated that it was intended to keep him from standing for president in 2026. A “witch hunt” is another term he has used. President Donald Trump of the United States has already repeated his remarks by imposing 50% tariffs on Brazilian imports, which he justified as punishment for Bolsonaro’s case. The guilty decision was “shocking” to Trump, who linked it to his own experience.
