France has encouraged its people to leave Mali “as soon as possible” following a weekend of coordinated attacks by separatist forces and Islamist terrorists. In an update on Wednesday, the advisory also warned French citizens against travelling to the West African country, characterizing the situation as “extremely volatile”.
On Saturday, there were reports of explosions and persistent shooting around the country, including in Bamako, the capital. Sadio Camara, the defense leader of Kati, was killed in what appears to be a suicide bombing by militants, while separatist troops have gained control of Kidal. General Assimi Goïta, Mali’s military head, stated that the country’s security situation is under control.
On Tuesday evening, he stated in public for the first time that the army had dealt a “violent blow” to the attackers.The French foreign ministry, Mali’s former colonial power, stated that “French nationals are advised to make arrangements to leave Mali temporarily as soon as possible on the commercial flights that are still available. It stated that they should stay at home, limit their travel, follow local authorities’ directions while awaiting their departure, and keep their family informed.
