On Friday, France’s top constitutional body approved legislation on the right to assisted dying, but overturned a restriction on social media access for children under 15, undermining one of President Emmanuel Macron’s most prized measures.

Macron’s administration praised the Constitutional Council’s decision on the assisted dying law, which is seen as one of the most significant social changes of his second term. The decision “completes an exemplary democratic debate,” the Élysée Palace stated, adding that the measure “provides an essential safeguard for our fellow citizens.”

At the same time, his administration stated that the president had no plans to abandon his campaign to ban children from using apps like TikTok, and that the government was working on a new draft law. After years of deliberation, parliament passed laws granting some adults with terminal conditions the right to assisted dying in July. Following the Constitutional Council’s decision, France will join the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, and Canada in legalizing the practice.
