Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, who has been in his position for 100 days, spoke at the Kansas City Fed’s symposium in Wyoming. He said the US economy has strengthened rather than weakened amid recent shocks, that the labour market is in line with full employment, and that inflation remains the central bank’s primary concern.

Warsh did not reveal his plans for next month, but he eliminated most of the reasons against taking action and strengthened the arguments in support of raising interest rates. The general performance of the economy seems to have strengthened,” Warsh added. “I am impressed by it today. The resilience of an economy is a measure of its strength. According to him, Main Street and Wall Street have shown incredible resilience in this regard. With regard to inflation, Warsh pointed out that the PCE index was 3.7% over a twelve-month period and 4.1% over a six-month period, and that 54% of the basket’s components had increases of more than 3% in the last year, compared to 32% in the twenty-first century prior to the pandemic.

Surprisingly high summer readings “do not tell me that underlying trends have meaningfully improved,” admitted Warsh. Summing up, the head of the Federal Reserve said it like it is: “the Fed’s predominant focus right now should be on prices.
