Israel carried out multiple air strikes across the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, saying the attacks were a response to ceasefire violations by Hamas. Israeli officials claimed that Hamas fighters had attacked Israeli troops inside Gaza and failed to comply with terms related to returning the bodies of deceased hostages.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said Hamas had crossed a “bright red line” and vowed that the group would “pay many times over” for its actions. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed that he had ordered “forceful strikes” but did not elaborate on the reasons.

Hamas, however, denied any involvement in the alleged attack, saying it remained committed to the US-brokered ceasefire agreement.

According to Gaza’s Civil Defence agency and hospital officials, at least 33 Palestinians were killed in the air strikes that hit homes, schools, and residential buildings in Gaza City, Beit Lahia, al-Bureij, Nuseirat, and Khan Younis. Witnesses reported heavy explosions shaking multiple areas of the territory.Israeli media said that troops in Rafah came under anti-tank missile and sniper fire earlier in the day, while Palestinian outlets reported Israeli shelling in the same region.
