South Korean presidential contender Lee Myung stated on Sunday that the timeline for reaching an agreement with the United States about President Donald Trump’s trade tariffs has to be re-examined in order to establish a win-win solution between the two allies. Lee told a press conference that one of the main obstacles facing the victor of the June 3 election would be negotiating tariffs with the United States.
After Yoon Suk Yeol was ousted from office and impeached as president in December for temporarily imposing martial law, a snap election was scheduled. According to opinion surveys, Lee, a member of the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea, is ahead of conservative candidates.
Washington and Seoul have stated that they hope to draft a tariff and economic cooperation pact by July 8. However, the South Korean minister of commerce and industry recently stated that there was insufficient time and that the election would allow delays.
Lee remarked, “There is not much time.” Diplomacy benefits both parties, doesn’t it? Diplomacy is not practiced when one nation unilaterally gains an advantage while the other suffers. We refer to this as plunder. He said the two nations “need to reconsider whether the timeline set by one side should be bound to,” urging them to respect one another.
