The security minister of Mexico stated that thousands of troops had been sent in to increase security after a wave of violence broke out after the death of a prominent drug lord. An additional 2,500 troops were sent to western Mexico on Monday, according to Defense Secretary Ricardo Trevilla. The administration estimates that 9,500 troops have been sent since Sunday.

Since Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho,” passed away in captivity on Sunday, just hours after being apprehended by Mexican special forces in Jalisco state, there has been unrest in at least 20 states.

One of Mexico’s most dreaded criminal groups is the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), whose head was the most wanted person in the nation.
Mexico’s security minister reported that since the violence started, at least 25 members of the National Guard have lost their lives in Jalisco state.

Defence Secretary Trevilla said El Mencho was apprehended after police found a romantic partner he was seeing. In the process of moving him from the village of Tapalpa to the capital, Mexico City, the drug lord died after being gravely wounded in a battle between his bodyguards and the military commandos sent to apprehend him.
