The presidents of Ukraine and its key European allies, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, have set forth five prerequisites for reaching a “just and lasting” agreement to stop the war with Russia.
Volodymyr Zelensky, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz issued a joint statement following meetings in London stating that they will “stand firmly with Ukraine”.
The five requirements include putting an end to the fighting, beginning negotiations from the current posture in the field, and providing “robust” security guarantees to Ukraine. The leaders emphasized the importance of the United States participating in the process, despite the fact that US President Donald Trump’s attention has switched to the fight with Iran.
Back in December, the US urged Russia and Ukraine to rapidly sign on to a plan to end the war, which began with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision in February 2022 to launch a full-scale invasion of its neighbor.
The warring parties have recently expanded their attacks on each other, with Russia utilizing missiles and drones to attack Ukrainian cities and Ukraine demonstrating enhanced ability to penetrate deep into Russian territory using new technologies.
