The US government has retaliated against Brussels after the European Commission fined Google €890 million on Thursday for violating the bloc’s Big Tech rules, warning that the sentence jeopardizes the EU-US trade agreement.

The Commission imposed the first penalties against Google under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), after a two-year inquiry into the company’s alleged unfair practices, including self-preferencing its own services in search results and discriminatory treatment of app developers.

The consequence aroused the ire of Washington, which sees the EU’s digital laws as unjustly targeting American businesses and has often compared the fines to trade tariffs. Critics argue that the plan allows Washington to pressure Brussels to modify EU digital laws for American corporations, threatening tariff reprisal. This is in addition to two recent actions by the Commission under the Digital Markets Act that target Google’s Android operating system and Search services, posing serious risks to users’ privacy and security, representing de facto forced technology transfer and intellectual property theft, and imposing unreasonable financial penalties,” US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said in a statement following the news.
