Macron Admits to the 1944 Senegal Massacre

In a letter to Senegalese President Bassirou Diyomaye, French President Emmanuel Macron admitted that the 1944 massacre of West African soldiers by the French army constituted a massacre. It occurs eight decades after the murder.

Between thirty-five and four hundred unarmed West African troops were shot after they refused to pay their wages. This should mark the end of a troubling period in the history of Senegal and France. It’s particularly odd because it coincides with France’s decline in power in the West African nations where it had colonies before to the Second World War. The question of whether Macron’s inquiry will help people heal the historical wound in their memories is, in fact, up in the air.

France was forced to remove its troops in many of the countries in the region, including Male, where the military had gained control. Most of the 350 French soldiers stationed in Senegal are in support roles.

France has had a challenging relationship with the colonies. The colonies and their inhabitants had certain benefits as part of the French colonial empire, such as French citizenship, but there was also brutal repression and racial discrimination.

The core of French colonial history is this paradox: Republican France sought to spread to the colonies the values of liberty, equality, and fraternity that characterized the French Revolution of 1789. However, the foundation of French colonial culture was racial discrimination.
