In order to support immigrants like himself who are facing deportation proceedings, student protest leader Mohsen Mahdawi has made an appearance at the Vermont state house to assist start a legal defence fund.
His Thursday appearance comes about a week after Mahdawi was freed from immigration detention, where he had been held for almost 16 days due to his pro-Palestinian views. Citing a rule from the Cold War that permits the deportation of foreign nationals judged to have negative foreign policy implications for the United States, the Trump administration has attempted to deport Mahdawi and other student activists for their protests.
Despite being freed on bond, Mahdawi is still being deported. At a press conference when he and state representatives unveiled the Vermont Immigration Legal Defence Fund, he spoke about his time in prison. Additionally, I might not be here with you today if it weren’t for the love and support I received from Vermonters and their officials.
Leading the student demonstrations at Columbia University, an Ivy League university in New York City that has been in the vanguard of pro-Palestinian activism, brought Mahdawi into the national limelight.
