Musk and Ambani Team up in an Unexpected Internet Deal for Starlink India

After months of dispute over how the country should allocate spectrum to them, Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio suddenly decided to launch Starlink satellite internet services in India.

Thanks to the largest telecom carrier in India using Starlink equipment, Starlink will have a direct distribution channel in thousands of retail locations across the country. Following a heated dispute between Musk and Ambani over the allocation of airwaves for satellite internet, New Delhi finally agreed with the plan that the American businessman had advocated.

The distribution deal will eventually allow the Indian billionaire to compete with his rivals and provide their products in the quickly growing market, easing concerns at Reliance and Ambani that Musk would take over the telecom sector if he launches his own.

“Starlink’s entry into the Indian market has been unexpected, but it’s a wise move and a win-win for all the parties involved, who were previously fighting for the pie and are now working together and sharing,” said Neil Shah, co-founder of the research firm Counterpoint.

The Reliance agreement comes a day after Starlink and Bharti Airtel, the country’s second-largest telecom provider, announced a similar cooperation. The Jio and Airtel agreements are conditional upon Starlink.
