According to the authorities, India has repatriated about 300 of its citizens who were tricked into working in scam compounds and engaging in cybercrime and other fraudulent acts after being enticed to many countries in southeast Asia, including Myanmar, with false job offers. As nations cooperate to combat the criminal networks, thousands of people have been released from cyber fraud centers along the Thailand-Myanmar border this year.
India’s foreign ministry announced late Monday that 283 Indian people were repatriated by an Indian Air Force (IAF) plane from Mae Sot in Thailand today after Indian embassies in Thailand and Myanmar worked with local authorities.
Last week, as part of its crackdown on fraud centers, Thailand arrested 100 people. According to the UN, criminal gangs have brought hundreds of thousands of individuals to the centers, which make billions of dollars annually from illicit online operations.
India has warned its people about the scams, telling them to “verify” the credentials of international employers and look up the “antecedents” of organizations and recruiting agents before accepting employment offers.
