In an effort to bolster its nuclear war deterrent, North Korea stated Thursday that its most recent missile tests included a new hypersonic technology. This comes as leader Kim Jong-un continues to develop weapons that are intended to outclass South Korean defenses.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the official news agency of North Korea, reported the incident one day after the South Korean military claimed to have seen the North fire several missiles from a location south of Pyongyang. The missiles claimed to have flown approximately 350 kilometers northeast before hitting the ground.

According to KCNA, the two hypersonic projectiles used in the launches precisely hit a land target in the northern part of the nation. The system was referred to as strategic, suggesting that the missiles were intended to carry nuclear warheads.

The missile system that was tested was not identified by KCNA. Kim showed off some of his military’s newest weaponry at a military parade earlier this month, including what looked to be a short-range ballistic missile equipped with hypersonic glide vehicles.

Days prior to the biennial Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference in South Korea, which are anticipated to bring together international leaders such as Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump, the tests were conducted.
