The killing of a Minneapolis woman by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent sparked a nationwide outcry on Saturday that spread to American cities, with demonstrators calling for justice for Renee Good and the expulsion of federal immigration authorities from local communities.
Snowflakes fell in Minneapolis as thousands of people gathered in parks, on residential streets, and outside federal buildings to chant Good’s name. Good’s death has become a focal point of national outrage over the methods used by federal authorities in US cities to carry out President Donald Trump’s extensive immigration crackdown.
From Los Angeles and New York to Washington, DC, El Paso, and Boston, similar demonstrations took place all over the United States. The “ICE out for good” broad alliance of advocacy organizations organized more than 1,000 protests nationwide this weekend.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, coalition member group Indivisible stated, The response to ICE’s horrific killing of Renee Nicole Good is loud, peaceful, and inescapable.” The post included pictures of rallies in many cities. The coalition stated that the protests are in response to “the escalation of ICE violence in our communities,” the deadly ICE shooting of Good, and “the months-long pattern of unchecked violence and abuse in marginalized communities across America.” All events are intended to be “nonviolent, lawful, and community-led” actions to pay tribute to those who have lost their lives in ICE confrontations and call for accountability.
