Norwegian public TV NRK said that the 28-year-old man gave them information regarding the embassy’s security procedures, floor plans, and diplomats.
On Wednesday, an Oslo court determined that a former security guard at the US Embassy in Norway had spied for both Russia and Iran and sentenced him to espionage.

The Norwegian man, 28, was given a term of three years and seven months in prison; his identity has not been disclosed. Although he had admitted the facts of the indictment, he had denied any criminal responsibility. He provided information regarding the embassy’s diplomats, floor plans, and security procedures, as reported by the prosecution and Norwegian public radio NRK.

In a statement released on Thursday, the man’s defense lawyers claimed the decision calls into doubt what, in terms of Norwegian law, constitutes espionage. In the statement, lawyer Inger Zadig of Elden Law Firm claimed, “He overstated his own role and lied to agents from other countries about having security clearance.”

His level of access was comparable to that of an embassy janitor. He provided information that was useless and incapable of endangering people or any state’s security interests, either individually or collectively. Acquitted of blatant corruption, the defendant was found guilty of five crimes relating to espionage.
